1855: near accident w/threshing machine prompted life change, he entered Westminster College, Pennsylvania, except for 3 months as teacher near Galena
1860: Sept. Monmouth College, Monmouth, Illinois
1861: Spring. Helped organize the 9th Illinois Infantry.
1861: May. Joined Company F,17th Illinois Infantry. Commissioned as Captain April 20. Elected Major after Vicksburg, but never received commission. Served at Fredericktown, Mo., Fort Donelson, Shiloh, and in the seiges of Corinth and Vicksburg
1864: June 4. Mustered out at Springfield, IL
1864: Married Jennie E. Lindsay, daughter of Hon. J. T.Lindsay, of Peoria. 5 children: Maggie, Linnie, Jessie, Charles and Herbert. Jessie died when five months old.
1863: Sept. Returned to Monmouth College
1864: Oct. Started at Monmouth Theological Seminary
1865 : graduated with A. M. from Monmouth College
1867: graduated from Seminary with the degree of B. D.
1866: Sept 4. licensed at South Henderson, Illinois, by the United Presbyterian Presbytery, of Monmouth, to preach the gospel
1866: May – June supplied the church at Hanover, Illinois, from which he after- ward received a call.
1866: Birth of dau. Maggie W.
1867: Apr 17. Moved to the O. S. Presbyterian denomination, Presbytery of Peoria, O. S., at Lewistown, Illinois
1867: June – Aug. Pastor at El Paso, IL.
1867: Sept. Called to the church at Macon, IL
1868: Mar 16. Macomb church destroyed by tornado
1868: Aug. Moved to Canton.

1869: Mar 25. Call from Canton; May 11 was ordained and installed.
