1839 – Nov; writes letter to Elizabeth Gates
1840 – 44 – home missionary, McDonough, Adams, and Pike Counties, Ill. (In 1835, his uncle Isaac had moved to Hillsgrove in McDonough Co, IL; a few relatives attended Knox College in the 1850s)
1842 – 43 – Instructor in Greek and Natural History, at Dr. David Nelson’s Mission Institute, Quincy, Ill.
1844 – 45 – principal of school, Natchez, Miss.
1845 – 47 – traveled in New Granada, South America to research Botany
1848 – 52 – Professor of Botany, N. Y. College of Pharmacy
1854- 55 – Lecturer on Chemistry and Natural History, College of N. J.
1855 – 56 – stated supply pastor for churches at Meredith Village, N. H. and Cornwall, Vt.
1856 – 57 – Professor of Chemistry and Natural History, Middlebury College, Vt.
1857 – Author of “New Grenada : Twenty Months in the Andes.”
1858 – Apr 26 – married Mary Susanne Warner, dau. of Dea. D. Warner of Cornwall, Vt.
1858 – 63 – stated supply pastor for churches at  Lawrence (McHenry County), Chemung, and Alden, Ill
1859 – dau. Clara born at Lawrence, IL.
1860 – May 1 – ordained as Presbyterian
1860 – dau. Nancy born at Cornwall, Vt.
1863 – 65 – stated supply pastor, McDonough Co., Ill.
1864 – son Edward (Rev. Edward Payson Holton) born at Hillsgrove, McDonough Co., IL
1865 – 67 – editor of the “Boston Recorder,” editor of “Boston Daily News,” from its establishment.
1866 – son  Charles (Rev. Charles Sumner Holton) born at Medford, Mass.
1874 – Jan 25. Died at age 61 from heart disease, at Everett, Mass.
